Fuel cell electrode catalysts
The demand for fuel cells, an eco-friendly technology with low carbon emissions, is expanding to achieve global carbon neutrality. We develop and supply electrode catalysts optimised for customer needs for high performance and high quality of fuel cell solutions. Heesung Catalysts develops and supplies electrode catalysts that are applied to the anode (cathode, fuel pole) and cathode (anode, air pole) of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) and phosphoric acid fuel cells (PAFC). Precious metal (platinum) and alloy catalysts are mainly used, and the type and amount of catalysts used vary depending on the fuel cell application (transportation, power generation, building).
Fuel cell structure
Anode catalyst
An IrOx-based catalyst that separates water fed to the anode of a water electrolysis device into oxygen, hydrogen cations (proton), and electrons.
Chemical formula : 2H2 → 4H+ + 4e
Cathode catalyst
A precious metal catalyst that recombines hydrogen cations and electrons to produce hydrogen. Generally, catalysts based on precious metals (Pt, Pt alloys, etc.) are used.
Chemical reaction formula : O2 + 4H+ + 4e–→ 2H2O
